Ken asks…

How much would you estimate the cost of building a wooden rowing shell?

I am wondering about cost of materials plus the amount of time I would have to invest into it. Also, how difficult would it be for somebody like me with no boat building experience? Looking for answers from somebody who has stitch and tape boat building experience.

Backlinks Bonanza answers:

It is easier and cheaper then most think…
The link below overs plans and kits… I have been buying plans from these guys for over 40 years. They are good people, have great selection of plans, but most importantly, they are there for you “after the sale is made”. They will answer your questions, and help you complete your boat building project.

They have a nice 17′ rowing shell set of plans for $82.00 and a stitch and glue kit for $144.00 – You can build this boat for under $1,000.
Purchase Plans vs Free plans – take it from me… (the old man that has so much experience screwing up – I can help you prevent doing the same… ) Free plans are worth every penny you pay for them… NOTHING!
Purchase plans are worth their weight in an accurate “Bill of Marerials” alone… These guys have not only drawn up the plans, but they have actually built the boat… So, they know exactly what materials you need, and know exactly the best way to build and assemble the boat… Trust me – buy the plans from the people that have built the boat!
The site below is a great site… Lots of great boat building information and pictures, and “how to” instructions, tips, suggestions, etc. (Well worth a look!)
Also, if you call them, or email them, they will tell you exactly what that boat is likely to cost you to build, and for $10 they will send you study plans with a complete Bill of Materials that you can use to cost out yourself… And then they will deduct that $10 from your order for the full set of plans…

Happy and Safe Boating!
John

Mark asks…

how do you get rid of a link that has hijacked your email account and is sending out spam?

how do you get rid of a link that has hijacked my email account and is sending out male enhancement products to all my friends in my address book. It randomly sends emails out to my friends. How do i stop this and i have changed my password to my email account.

Backlinks Bonanza answers:

This happens alot…usually a win 32 backdoor Trojan or bot is placed on the computer by going to unsecured sites or visiting a website that has a Malicious URL code built in for anyone clicking on the website….your e-mail has not been hacked…nor do you need to change your password (but that is up to you)…..but the infection(s) must be removed…download and scan with these two free utilities….and when you download malwarebytes…it will ask you for a free trial to the paid pro version…just click “no thanks”…the free version works just as well….

Betty asks…

How do I set up a website and register a domain name for my small business?

I have a small business building fences patios and decking etc, and want to set up a website to advertise myself. I just need a basic site to display pictures of my work, and give contact info. I know nothing about how to do this so please give any answers in laymans terms. Thanks in advance.

Backlinks Bonanza answers:

To setup a proper website and have a domain you need to look at a domain and hosting company like 1and1.co.uk. You can use a template and setup a basic web page. There will be a yearly charge even though costs are quoted at monthly.

There are some hosting options; one is BT Tradespace (free) which you could buy a domain and point to this site. The second is Free Index (free). And thirdly there is yell.co.uk who offer web space, not sure how much.

The advantage of a domain and web hosting site is you can have a proper email address like me@mydomain.co.uk. Note that .com address will be more expensive. But you do have to maintain it and do some things to get it into the search engines.

My neighbours have installed a new boiler with the outlet underneath my bedroom window. Is this allowed?

I’m the top floor flat in a 2-storey building. My downstairs neighbours had a new boiler fitted today with the exhaust / outlet directly beneath my bedroom window. When the boiler comes on, stinky fumes go into my bedroom. I’m not happy about this and wondered if there are any regulations (in the UK) about installing boilers under neighbours windows? Any links would be appreciated so I can pass them on to the neighbours.

Backlinks Bonanza answers:

As its a new boiler it will be fan flued so get your measuring tape out , it should be more than 300mm away from openings into dwellings , if its condensing it will plume steam which can be a nuisance but not life threatening , if you still feel worried why not ask your neighbour if they can move the flue along the outside away from your window , its not a big job and will envolve lenghtening the flue outlet of there boiler .
Lastly you will not get carbon monoxide fumes coming in your window these are only generated in unventilated and incomplete combustion cases , proper combustion gives off water vapour and carbon dioxide , only when theres a faulty flue or inadequate ventilation does the carbon dioxide get reburnt which produces the carbon monoxide , as there boiler will be fan flued if theres a flue fault the boiler will shut down .hope this helps i would speak to your neighbour and see if there willing to extend there flue as its causing you a nuisance , if its closer than 300mm report it to corgi who will make the fitter fix the installation , only other thing is all boilers are different size wise from openings , if you can find out which 1 make and model wise go to the manufacturers web site and bingo a size

Which free web hosting could be a good choice for the website of a lecture?

Does anyone have tips on building an amazing bike trail?

Does anyone have tips on building an amazing bike trail? I live on a mountain with around 150 Acres of wooded land at my desposal. One problem is that because it is on a mountain (literally) it has a fairly steep grade. Also unfortunatly I don’t have a GPS device :( So any tips on marking out paths would be greatly appreciated.

Backlinks Bonanza answers:

Wow…that’s an awesome opportunity you have!!!

I’m not a super-expert on trailbuilding but I’ve done my fair share and have ridden tons of trails. I think the best advice I could give you is to spend a lot of time reading the IMBA website. Look in their “resources” section….there’s literally tons of info there to help with design, building, and sustainability, as well as advice on liability and smart planning. Http://www.imba.com

Also, you can get a free dvd from the US Forestry Service about trail building/sustainability. You can find it on their site, and I think IMBA has a link to it as well (might have to search for it).

Building on steep grades is a real challenge because you have to do it right in order to make a nice flowy trail, and to prevent rains from destroying all of the work you put into it. You’ll have to do the switchbacks properly and probably do a lot of bench cuts/build-ups…..major pain in the back!

There are lots of other places for info out there….if you ask this question on some of these sites and forums you may get a motherlode of resources and advice. Good luck…hope it turns out great! :o )

How to get my internet based business more action?

I just started my web-based business 2 months ago, and am patiently waiting for it to take off. I have been researching ways to increase traffic to my site and don’t have the budget for buying ranks on yahoo seaches or any of that software that is out there. Besides real-time advertisement ie Word of mouth, flyers etc. What else can I do?
I accidentally did that on some of my other postings then learned that it was a violation of YahooASK rules, so no, I will not list my website
Okay-details on the website: it involves admissions consulting, reviewing applications and editing essays, resumes etc. Most of my friends say that the site is great so I am not worried about the setup or presentation– I need advice on how to promote my website without buying all of the extra stuff that is offered on the internet.

Backlinks Bonanza answers:

“If you build it, they will come” is not necessarily true on the Web. Putting a website up is one thing, but getting visitors to come to your site is another. The process becomes even more difficult if you have limited resources to market your business.

You can try pay per click programs such as Google Adwords http://www.google.com/adwords or Yahoo Search Marketing http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com – though the key is to carefully track your ROI and which keywords actually perform well

Here are some shoestring marketing ideas that can help you get the visitors you need at the least cost possible:

1. Create the best content you can with the best products you can possibly offer. Your content is your best advertisement – if visitors love your content, then they will go back and spread the word to others.

2. Make it easy for users to recommend your site. Viral marketing is very important — and easy to tap on the Web. But give your users the tools. Get a Recommend this Site script from websites such as cgiscripts.com and similar directories of scripts. Some even go as far as giving incentives to those who recommend the site to their friends. If only 10 people go to your site, but these 10 people invite 10 more – that’s additional traffic that you get for FREE!

Recommend Site Scripts (various) http://php.resourceindex.com/Complete_Scripts/Website_Promotion/Recommend_Site/

3. Rank well in the search engines (organic search results, not the pay per click). SEs can be a big source of traffic. The key is to create the best content in your niche. If you have good content, other websites will gladly link to you and offer your site as a resource to their audience. Check the on-page factors and be sure to get linked from authority sites in your topic area.

4. Send out press releases. While outfits charge as much as $650 per release, there are free press release submission places on the Web. Press releases allow you to (a) attract media attention; (b) get more back links to your website without sending each website an email request; and (c) get more visibility especially if your press release gets in Google News or Yahoo News.

What are some creative Online marketing Strategies?

I am looking to advertise a new web site upon its completion. I know about being on a search engine, banners, and simple things like that. I am looking for some new creative ways of advertising that have been created by using the web. I am not very familiar with these new internet-based advertising schemes such as network marketing, however, these are the type of things I am looking to learn of and about. If you have any idea, an explanition of that idea would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

How do I get traffic for my site?

My site ( http://slyvisions.webhop.net ) is a blog. Main topics range from “how to make money online” to just everyday current events. I’ve tried almost everything to get site traffic, but I think I might be missing something.

Backlinks Bonanza answers:

Getting traffic to your site requires a lot of work and patience.
One of the things you can do is to get an account at squidoo and write an article about a subject on your site and submit it to them. They call them lens. You can also answer questions at Yahoo answers and put a link to your blog in the source box. Get on some forums and answer some questions or interact on them for awhile, then put your link to your blog in the signature box for your forum replies or questions. Write articles and submit them to article directories with a link to your blog in the resource box. If you can’t write then outsource the writing. Join a link exchange program such as link metro and get as many backlinks to your blog as possible. Get into some of the social networks such as Myspace, get lots of friends and suggest they visit your blog. Check out stumbleupon. You could also use some of the minor search engines and purchase ppc (payperclick) traffic for your blog.

Why does my male crowntail betta leave this bubbling stuff at the top of his 7 gallon aquarium?

Okay so yesterday i asked a question concerning him fighting with my other fish in my 30 gallon tank. Well i went out and bought a 7 gallon aquarium just for him and put him in it. Just now i went to feed him and noticed theres all this bubbly look material all over the top? I’m serious does it mean he’s courting or something? Should i buy a female? I don’t know if i should because i’ve never bred bettas only guppies.

Backlinks Bonanza answers:

He’s happy and building a nest.
NO do not get a female! Unless you have loads of time, money and space, breeding a fish just because is not a good idea. Bettas can have any where from 100 to 500 eggs. Now while most won’t survive, what are you going to do with even fifty? They have to be separated around three months, as that is when the males usually get nippy. So unless you have plenty of time to monitor the spawning and room to grow out the fry, don’t bred them. Here is a link for a breeder I use. She shows her “fish” room and has articles on spawning that is quite interesting. Also, if you go to her stock page and look under crowntails, you can see the one that is swimming its way to me! Number 177 is a red/white/blue crowntail I fell in love with!

Read some more sites and then make a decision. Just because your male is happy now, doesn’t mean you should breed him.
Good luck and good job making your friend comfortable!

Build backlinks?More and more links?

Backlinks Bonanza answers:

The most effective way to advertise on the Internet is
to first set up a website and publish its domain name
on major search directories such as Google.com,
Yahoo.com [at http://www.google.com/addurl/?…… And
MSN.com since 85% of Internet shoppers rely on these
search directories to provide them with goods and
services. In a sense, these search directories are a
very large Internet Yellow Pages.

Nevertheless, should your website or opening webpage
fail to contain “generic” keywords, then anyone using
such “generic” queries will not be able to discover
your website. Your domain name [URL] of your website,
in a sense, will be invisible, undiscoverable.

You may want to consider some simple algorithms which,
when observed and committed in designing of a website
with placement of various critical metatags that can
surely achieve a high search engine presence and
increase Internet traffic to your website. These
metatag strategies work well with published webpages
at Google and Yahoo.

Design: Should you create an extensive Flash-based
website, make sure to fill-in the property entries
such as the Title, Description and Keywords. Failing
to do so, leaves no hard HTML or ALT resource that can
be readily indexed by search robots. Also consider the
Internet audience and their incoming setup. For
example, if they are on analog/dialup, Flash webpages
take too long to load up and therefore analog users
will likely lose interest and discontinue entering the
Flash site. On the other hand, anyone on hi-speed DSL
lines, will welcome Flash pages which load quickly. So
before designing a pure Flash websitge, ask the simple
question, “Who’s my end user – is he on dialup or
DSL?” And if you had to choose between these two users
for maximum marketability, then select analog users
since 80% of most resident users are still analog
Internet subscribers and pure HTML designed webpages
is best for them.

A non-Flash-based website which relies on hard text,
is far easier to be indexed by search robots. Limit
the use of stylized text saved as .gifs since as a
graphic, they are not indexable by search robots.

Avoid use of frames since any number of search robots
are unable to properly classify textual material.

Placement of Metatags:

A ranking or search order does take place with Google
and Yahoo and it begins with the “Title” metag which
should consist of no more than 65 characters separated
by commas. The “Title” should describe in generic
terms, the goods and services, followed by a location
from which the resource is located, i.e., city, state.
The placement of a domain name which is not generic
within the “Title” is not appropriate, unless your
domain name is a major recognizable brand name.

The second metatag is the “Description” which is
usually 25-30 words to form a complete sentence which
best describes one’s goods and services.

And the very last category – “Keywords” are also
somewhat limited to 15-16 words which can be plural
and compound in nature. Again, avoid multiple entries
which could be mistaken as “spamdexed entries” which
is defined as the loading, and submission of
repetitive words into a particular metatag category.
“Spamdexing” when discovered on a webpage and reported
to Google’s spamreport.com can result in the
elimination of your website from their search
directory.

Good luck!

Where can I find out how to write articles and press releases for my site to build my google rank?

I want to know a site that shows you how to make articles and press releases for your site to build google ranking and get back links to your website. I would hope they would be tutorials or something like that so I can learn how to do it by myself.

Backlinks Bonanza answers:

You build Google ranking by having backlinks from sites that are already well-established, and who choose to link to you because your content is so great.

Just writing a new article – which you could do on Hubpages, or Triond, or similar article sites, if you can write a relevant article that includes a link to your site – would not actually help at all, unless it was a very popular and highly ranked article. But if it’s just advertising your site, then it wouldn’t be allowed.

As for press releases – you’d have to get in contact with whatever newspapers or other publications might be interested in your site. But if it’s the kind of site that’s big enough for a newspaper to want to announce it, you’ll probably get backlinks fairly easily from other sites anyway.

What are good online highschool or homeschool curriculums that I can start over summer and graduate early?

For the record, I live in California; I know state standards have an effect on a question like this. Also, if you’re not planning on directly answering the question, please read the long version before commenting.
Short Version:
I would like to be able to graduate a year early – I’m currently a sophomore going to the closest public high school, but as soon as I get let out for summer I’m hoping to be able to start right away and be done with highschool by the end of the school year, if not by the end of the actual year (~Late December 2013). What are some (preferably faster/easier, I do a ton outside of school) options? Whether it’s college prep or not doesn’t matter.
Long Version:
I’m a sophomore student a year older than my grade who doesn’t get along with the people my age. I currently go to the local public highschool, but plan on transferring out to some form of online or homeschool system at the end of the year. That’s what I need help with picking. At my school, everyone is extremely immature and stupid, and no one seems to think things through before they do them. But ironically, by definition, I’m a poor student – I don’t turn in all my work, I have a horrid time focusing, and it feels like the lessons being taught should last five minutes, but are stretched out to last an hour.
I’ve thought about taking honors classes, but practically all of people I know who do spend the majority of their time doing homework. That honestly wouldn’t work for me because of how much I do outside of school – I currently hold an internship at an IT (industrial data continuity and disaster recovery, specifically) company, and I’m the local music/recording guru (along with computer and other media gigs/jobs I’m given). Because music and tech are the two things I would like to base my career(s) in, I figure those are more important because I’m learning skills that I can use for the rest of my life as opposed to random information that I’ll forget less than a year after I graduate.
I don’t plan on going to college (at least not right away, but I’m not completely ruling out the option). I have a buddy I plan on moving up to Nashville with and opening a recording studio once I get out of highschool – I know, in the long run, the odds of it working out are almost none, but I figure it’s an adventure. And anyway, in the music business it’s not about education, it’s about who you know (and sometimes your talent). My plan B would be to go into some field of the computer/tech industry (assuming music didn’t work out). The same person who got me the internship I work now has told me that he’d be glad to help me out, and that he’d hire me without a second thought wherever he’s working. One of the things we talked about was how, in that industry, it’s all about experience because when you go to college to learn the same thing, you’re learning things that are a year or two (if you’re lucky) behind what’s actually out there. So neither my plan A nor plan B require a college degree, which is why that isn’t a huge priority to me.
Ever since 2nd grade I’ve had a horrible time learning in a classroom environment (as of 4th grade it was psychologist proved, haha no joke). I’ve always learned better at a faster pace (helps keep my attention), and I’ve always learned best teaching myself things. I’ve taught myself how to sing, play guitar, piano, drums and bass, do all the music production I do, build, fix (and break, haha) computers and other electronic equipment. I feel like it would be awesome to do school at home where I can pace myself as well as teach myself the content. I talked to my academic counselor about independent studies, but because of the way our school system is set up only people with physical medical conditions can be a part of that program.
These are only a small portion of the reasons why online schooling (or some form of homeschooling) appeals to me. So, that being said, what are some faster paced/easy online schools or homeschool curriculums that I could graduate from by the end of next school year, if not ~December 2013?

You are correct in your opening statement: Where you live plays an enormous role in what you can and cannot do. You need be absolutely sure you are meeting all laws for your state. I am not a lawyer and not a resident of California, so I can’t advise you there. This link may help you get started: http://www.californiahomeschool.net/howTo/legOpt.htm.

My recommendation:

1. Figure out what courses would normally constitute a high school education in your state. (You can find this out by visiting your state Department of Education website.) List out those which you have already taken, those which you are currently taking, and those which you would still need to complete. Your homeschooling laws may or may not have specific course requirements, so be sure you are meeting those as well.

2. Design a plan of study to finish the courses you still need. Now here’s where things can work quite well for what you want, but I would not be simply looking for the easy way out. Don’t shortchange your own education! Think of your education as a complete body of knowledge that you want to master. Schools are designed for the efficiency of the schools, not the students. When you consider it, is it even logical to assume that every single subject from algebra to world history to chemistry can all be learned in the exact same amount of time and days? When you are freed from the constraints of a school schedule, it is certainly possible to master a subject in less time (or more time, if needed) then the academic school year mandates. You may find it takes you two months of studying two hours a day to finish a US history course, but five months of studying one hour a day to finish geometry. You can work your schedule to suit your needs, goals, and skills.

3. Find your materials for your studies. Although you are not looking at college per se, I recommend you explore the following sites that are designed to help students prepare for college-level testing and/or college credits. You can use the same materials for your studies, without taking the exams at the end.

A) Free CLEP Prep: http://www.free-clep-prep.com/ Choose an exam study guide based on subject, such as American Government, and then scroll down the page for a list of free and inexpensive study materials.

B) CLEP for Homeschoolers: http://clepprep.tripod.com/cleplessonplans/id4.html This site gives basic lesson plans for each subject, generally broken down into a 9-week schedule. It does require the purchase of some books.

C) Homeschool College USA: http://www.homeschoolcollegeusa.com/ There are over 40 courses here, designed for homeschooling high school students who also want to take college-level exams. You can find all the core subjects, plus many electives. Everything is free and you do not need to purchase a thing. It is entirely self-directed and self-paced.

D) Saylor: http://www.saylor.org/ If you look at only one site in this list, make it this one. Between the general education courses, the electives, and all the courses offered under the various “majors,” you could put together an excellent course of study to finish high school and you can work as quickly as you want to finish each subject. You can create a student account to keep track of your work and record the grades you earn on the final exams. This site is also free and does not require the purchase of any materials.

E) Carnegie-Mellon Univeristy’s Open Learning Initiative: http://oli.cmu.edu/get-to-know-oli/learn-about-our-courses/ There’s not a whole lot here, but what they do have is very good. Additionally, there are plenty of websites that list the numerous open-learning courses universities offer. Just do a search on “open learning” or “opencourseware.” (Note, though, that outside of the Carnegie-Mellon courses, most open learning courses do require the purchase of a textbook.)

There are other options out there, such as the free online public schools, but for the most part, they do not let you move completely at your own pace.

I said it above, but I think it deserves repeating – don’t shortchange yourself and rush through your education so quickly that you don’t get anything at all out of it. Yes, frankly, you will forget a lot of it. Sometimes, though, it’s not about remembering when the Spanish-American War broke out or how to find the area of a trapezoid. It’s about training yourself to think. Like weight training will build up your muscles, “brain training” will help develop your critical thinking skills, something that can very much determine your success, or lack of, in life. I am not saying you can’t finish school faster than average; many students would if they weren’t locked into the traditional school calendar. I am simply cautioning you not to try to skimp too much, because there really is a genuine value to education, and you shouldn’t miss out in your rush to finish.
