What’s the worst that can happen on changing servers for website?

What’s the worst that can happen on changing servers for website?
What’s the worst thing that can happen when I choose to change my webserver and host somewhere else.My website is a “local” website with thousands! Of folowers subscribers and newsletters etc.Lets say I have 20,000 followers maybe more and over 5 to 10 thousand newsletters. And I want to change hosting to a server.I am told if I don’t transfer and save everything I will lose everything. Also my seo will be ruined and backlinks screwed up (whatever backlinks are).On the seo I could careless about seo my website is LOCAL and of course it will top rank on its own website result page in no time. And I update my data and articles weekly so I don’t think I have anything to lose.Im just wondering about backlinks.I also have Facebook and twitter and youtube fan pages but that has nothing to do with anything I’m just saying :)
I have to add my newsletter subscribers manualy I suppose ? Lol

Backlinks Bonanza answers:

If you move your website from one provider to another.. As long as they both support your software
( OS, Apache/IIS, PHP, etc.. ) .. Then you just need to transfer the files in one big “get” – “Put”..
Your new service provider can probably arrange the transfer for you, and let you test it.
..

While testing, the old website is still “live”, and you access the new site by http:/new ip address

I highly recommend overlapping by at least a few days, so you can make sure all your stuff works with the new provider. It gives you a chance to fix anything that may need it, too.

If testing works ok, then you just need to update any files that have changed ( or not.. If not a big deal).. And have your provider change your A record ( domain name -to- ip address) with your registrar.
Again, you can do this.. Or if you give the info.. You can have your provider do it for you.

If the software needs to change, then that can add a lot of problems with the functions you provide.
.. But that will happen if you change software with old provider or new provider.

The main problem from changing service providers is that you will have between 4- 24 hours of downtime. Not because anything is broken, but the DNS records propagate slowly. In order for every lookup to find your new address, it may take a day for all the DNS machines in the world to catch up with the new info. This will affect your SEO and backlinks, but only temporarily. They should be linking your domain, not your IP address.

Points:
1) You should have a backup of EVERYTHING. You should be doing this every day or every week, at least. If you ever have a problem.. Nobody but you is going to care as much for your data.
It is more important now that you are even considering changing providers. It may not be professional, but it is reality.. The “old” provider isn’t happy you are leaving. Make your own backups. Of course, it can’t hurt to tell them.. ” Hey, you guys have been pretty good for the past 2-3 years, but I have been told by friends that these other guys are great. If they aren’t all I need, then I’ll be back. Do you keep backups ? How long after I leave will you destroy all my old data? ”

2) passwords – Admin access to your files, so you can make backups.. So your provider can transfer files.. Passwords to change your Registration status.. Are dangerous.
Change them and write em down someplace safe as soon as you are done with the changeover.
Your old provider ( and some employees) will have easy access to your files and can get/crack passwords.. Then screw with your website. If they lose your data, or lose an old backup tape.. Then anyone in possession of that can crack passwords.
Anyone who gets your domain reg password can steal your domain name.

What is the most effective way to market an online business?

I am about to venture into starting an online business and feel overwhelmed with all the competition out there… Any tips on marketing schemes….

Backlinks Bonanza answers:

The best way is to rank well in the search engines (organic search results, not the pay per click). SEs can be a big source of traffic. The key is to create the best content in your niche. If you have good content, other websites will gladly link to you and offer your site as a resource to their audience. Check the on-page factors and be sure to get linked from authority sites in your topic area.

If you’re only going to read one how-to guide to get to the top of Google, the BEST and most comprehensive resource I found is WebmasterWorld.com’s Brett Tabke’s advice “Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone” http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum3/2010.htm

Other ideas:

1. Create the best content you can. Your content is your best advertisement – if visitors love your content, then they will go back and spread the word to others.

2. Make it easy for users to recommend your site. Viral marketing is very important — and easy to tap on the Web. But give your users the tools. Get a Recommend this Site script from websites such as cgiscripts.com and similar directories of scripts. Some even go as far as giving incentives to those who recommend the site to their friends.

3. Send out press releases. While outfits charge as much as $650 per release, there are free press release submission places on the Web. Press releases allow you to (a) attract media attention; (b) get more back links to your website without sending each website an email request; and (c) get more visibility especially if your press release gets in Google News or Yahoo News. PRWeb and my website accepts free press release submissions, among others.

4. Submit articles. Write articles and submit them to websites accepting author submissions. You get exposure for your business; establishes you as an authority in your field, and allows you to get backlinks for your website. Here is a VERY COMPREHENSIVE list of sites that accept article submissions http://answers.yahoo.com/question/;_ylt=AqmzHU_wN2q8JvMJ6ttE0ewjzKIX?qid=1006022407481

5. Syndicate your content. Use blog or RSS feeds to distribute your content. Everytime you update your content, those who are receiving your RSS feeds will get the latest info from you as well. Best Link Building Sites

Ken asks…

How do you get an RSS feed URL for your website?

I am building my first website and I am now in the link building process. There have been some directories that have asked for the RSS URL of my wensite, but I don´t know what they mean with that.

Backlinks Bonanza answers:

Depending on your site you may or may not has an inbuilt RSS Feed. If you site doesn’t then you can easily make an RSS Feed even if you page is just static HTML.

Try dapper.net/open . Just follow the prompts and you’ll have an RSS feed just like that.

P.S. You can make one for each page for extra submissions ;)

Lizzie asks…

how is the best way to start a site similar to myspace?

I am not looking for anything fancy just a place to build a site that allows people to add their own content.

Backlinks Bonanza answers:

Buy a domain name, buy a web hosting account, buy your needed software from http://www.ning.com and install it to your web hosting account.

As you may know a domain name is just a name, not a real website. If you are going to create your website: 1- Buy a domain name. A domain name is a name you want to call your website (ex: www.yahoo.com). To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. 2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your website online at your purchased domain name.

If you want to start your website I recommend purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today.

As an experienced webmaster I recommend BH web hosting which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.

You can reach reviews about this web hosting provider and its latest DISCOUNT COUPONS at:

http://www.threehosts.com/reviews/1st

They also offer “Free Site Builder” that helps you build your web pages without difficulty if you are not skilled in using any website creating program (WYSIWYG: What You See Is What You Get). You can use this service optionally. You can also create the pages offline with your favorite program (DreamWeaver, FrontPage, Microsoft Publisher, iWeb etc.), and then upload them to your web host. This is another easy way to get your website online.

******IMPORTANT********
* This service was awarded “The Best Web Host OF The Year”.
* If you sign up for this service you will have $75 credits to advertise your website with the google & yahoo search engines for free!
* You Can Register A Free Domain or Use Your Existing Domains. They Support All Domain Names.

Betty asks…

What is the best paint for glass; to mimic stained glass?

I have a window in my kitchen that used to look outside. We are building an addition, and now it will be looking into a closet. Rather than take the window out, I would like to paint the glass in a stained glass technique. I am not set on a mock stained glass…so if you have another really cool idea for painting glass, I appreciate that too.

What I really need to know is…what is the best paint for the job?

Backlinks Bonanza answers:

So the window will be looking into a dark area? With no light shining from the back? In that case, you won’t be able to use the regular transparent paints “glass paints”… They just won’t show up like you might want without light shining behind them. You could use glass paints that are translucent rather than transparent though–perhaps Pebeo has some like that which come in more opaque versions.

You could try though just put a sheet of white posterboard or anything white right behind the window, then use light or very bright colors of the glass paint and count only on the light shining onto the front of the paint/window. Or you could rig something up so that there was a light on in the closet, diffused and pointed toward the back of the window, but that would be fiddly, etc.

For more of a translucent or opaque version, you could just use regular acrylic paints (plain or pearly, craft versions or “artists” versions in tubes which should cover better in fewer coats).
Or you could even use (non-permanent) poster paints (with a bit of dish soap?) then put a clear gloss sealer over those to make them glossy.
You could also use shapes of self-adhesive films in colors instead of paints, I guess.

This person uses “white glue” mixed with acrylic paint for her lead lines, and “clear glue” mixed with acrylic paints for her panes:

http://www.suzyssitcom.com/2011/01/feature-friday-faux-stained-glass.html

(although “white glue” normally dries clear, but the more acrylic paint added to it–which is opaque– the more opaque it will become)

more ways to make “faux stained glass”:

http://www.google.com/search?q=faux+stained+glass

http://www.google.com/images?q=faux+stained+glass

http://www.google.com/images?q=faux+stained+glass+acrylic+paint

You could also create real stained glass or faux stained glass with polymer clay** to hang or mount in front of the window or behind it, rather than painting directly on top of the glass.

** (see links A & B below in Sources… I’ve exceeded the # I can put here)

…plus info, various techniques, tutorials, and links on this page at my site:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/LiquidSculpey.htm (click on “Stained Glass” and perhaps on “Cloisonne”)
…and my page on Covering has a section on covering glass which could be done stained glass style:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/covering.htm (click on “Glass & Ceramic”)

http://www.google.com/images?q=polymer+clay+votives

(those can be done translucent or opaque, etc)
…and to make them as solid clay with grout like “mosaics” but in stained glass stye:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/mosaics_inlay.htm (first half of page)
…and finally, you can do “paintings” directly on glass with solid or softened polymer clay, or colored liquid polymer clay, itself, which can be flat to dimensional and have all kinds of looks:

http://www.google.com/images?q=polymer+clay+painting

http://glassattic.com/polymer/paints.htm (click on “Polymer Paintings”… Info is good but most links are now dead… May want to check out especially the sub-category “drawn outline under sheet of glass or acrylic, or translucent papers”)

…and more sites online:
(see links C & D below in Sources… I’ve exceeded the # I can put here)

Good luck!

Susan asks…

How do I best optimze my site to show up in the top of Google for a certain term?

I’ve tried keywords, linking back and fourth, adding the keyword all over my front page and meta descriptions of “alt” text for images and even on the images that link back to my site.

Still, not even on the 3rd or 4th page for the term!

Any type of SEO software to recommend? What about something special I can add in my code?

Backlinks Bonanza answers:

First of all a warning: There is no quick fix for SEO. There are some tweaks you can make that will improve your rank a little bit but to get on page 1 for a good term it will take a lot of hard work or hiring an expert. There are no “SEO” applications that can get you to page 1. Each site is individual and needs a custom strategy. Beware of anyone who tells you they have a magic bullet solution. Don’t waste your money on these people. Trust me, I’ve been there and done that. The exception would be Aaron Walls SEO book, but that is a 300 page book that teaches you how to do things, not a quick fix.

You want to write good content that contains your keywords. You want your primary keywords in your title (this doesn’t mean a huge long title with every possible keyword in it, this means your one primary search phrase). And you want to repeat that phrase or variations of it in your text.

You want at least 500 words of text on your page and you want your search phrase to be 2-3% of that text. So you might want your search phrase to show up 15 times total on your page (including title, headers etc). Your meta keywords and meta description don’t effect your ranking at all.

Once you have taken care of these “on page” SEO tweaks it’s time to build links to your page that contain your search phrases. So if you were trying to rank for “my super duper keyword” you’d want to get links to your page with that text inside of the link (my super duper keyword). You don’t want to get everyone to link to you with that exact phrase because Google will see that as spam and diregard it. So you want a mix of keywords in the links that point to you.

Now your journey on the SEO path has just begun. You have a lot to learn if you want to show up on page 1 and do it all yourself. Or you can hire an SEO expert but that will cost you $3-4k to get one that knows what they are doing (don’t waist your money on people that aren’t experts in the industry).

See my references below to get started on your SEO learning.

Mary asks…

What are some good ways to rank naturally for keywords?

I know PPC is very helpful, but I wanted to try some other ways of ranking organically for keywords. Any ideas of ways to do this?

Thanks.
I already have a lot of relevant content, a blog, and I update my content regularly.

Backlinks Bonanza answers:

Study your competitors or those in the top 10 of the keywords you want to rank well. Look at how they present their content; find out what makes them top 10 material — from their domain URL, to title tags, to description tags to the content of the site to their backlinks

1 — Relevance of your content to the keywords. If you want to rank for “family vacations” make sure the page is about family vacations

2 — Put the most important keyword you want the page to rank in the title (or title tag).

3 — Put those keywords in the content of your site, particularly in your H1 and other H tags (or those article or section subtitles, if you use that)

4 — Get relevant sites to link to you. Instead of begging for them to link to you (which sometimes work but takes a lot of time) think of using link bait or content that is so great that others will want to link to you. Examples include top 10 or top 25 lists, funny videos, scoops or exposes

Getting traffic is a combination of a lot of things. The key to success is to create great content that visitors want to use, search engines will love and other websites will naturally link to. Of course, it’s easier said than done.

Sandra asks…

How do i claim land that is unregistered.?

Founa plot of land that isunregistered. How do i claim it so i can therefore build on it. I don not want to wait x amount of years i just want to cliam it put planning permission in and build it
To add to the question.

I am based in the UK and it is land pushed up from a river

Backlinks Bonanza answers:

Hi,

just because it’s unregistered doesn’t mean that the land isn’t owned. It’s probably worth contacting the local council to see if they have any records of ownership.

I also found this on the link referenced below:
For most unregistered land it’s 12 years [before you can claim it] but for Crown land or some Church land, it’s 30 years. (For registered land it’s 10 years).

In order for the Land Registry to consider your claim to the title of the land, by adverse possession, four tests must be met:
* the squatter has factual possession of the land;
* the squatter has the necessary intention to possess the land;
* the squatter’s possession is without the owner’s consent; and
* all the above have been true of the squatter and any predecessors through whom the squatter claims for at least 12 years prior to the date of the application.

That last test might prove the most difficult one to get through. You need to show that you (or the previous occupier(s) of your house have been using the land (rather than simply having access to it) throughout that period.

If you think that you can get through those qualifying tests, I recommend the following:

(i) read this:
http://www.planningsanity.co.uk/forums/ap/ap.h tm

(ii) download Land Registry Practice Guide 5. (There’s a link from that previous site)

(iii) if you still think you’ve got a valid claim, download Form FR1 (again, there’s a link from that first site), complete and get a solicitor to witness the relevant declaration. Then submit it and cross your fingers!

How many times better is a article submission as opposed to a regular link?
How many times better is a pr4-pr5 page link as opposed to a pr0?

Backlinks Bonanza answers:

It’s hard to measure exact figures.

A video, of course, is more engaging than just a regular link. And so is a published article.

Links from high PR sites are, of course, better than from low PR sites but if there are enough low PR sites to offset the advantage of high PR sites, making your site an authority, they’re definitely better.

Also, PR has to do with keywords. You rank for keywords that people use in searches. A quality link should be one-way, coming from relevant sites to your site, using your keyword(s) as anchor text. You don’t want to rank for “click here” or “yourname”. That is why, it is best to have your main keyword in your website title and URL.

It is also significant if your backlinks are coming from different domain names and IP addresses.

How can I get at least 1 million people to my music site in less than a month?

I’m new to websites and just wanted to know how I can attract at least 1 million music fans to my website within a month.

Backlinks Bonanza answers:

Get linked. This is a very important part of website management. Exchange links. Trading links with other websites that are closely related to the subject of your website can bring you more website traffic. These are two-way links because you must provide a link to them, too, and linking to low-quality websites can threaten the credibility of yours.

Advertise your presence. Besides using links, you must make use of numerous other ways to increase web traffic. Sit down and write a list of all the ways you can think of to get your web address noticed and clicked on. For example:

If you have money – consider pay per click. The big search engines like Google, Yahoo, Microsoft provide schemes. But find out first how to limit your expenditure to the level you want.

Use e-zines. Make your own that relate to your website and form a regular reminder each issue for people to visit your website. Submit all the free e-zine directories on the internet.

Submit your articles to e-zines, websites and writing sites that accept article submissions. Include your business information and web address at the end of the article. This is a good way to create one-way backlinks to your website. This is the most effective way to get listed on any search engine. Usually, the more relevant links you have pointing to your site the higher you will rank.

Go beyond the electronic medium and into the print medium. Advertise in local newspapers, business brochures, magazines, nationwide publications and mail-drop literature. And don’t forget the perennial favorite, the good old Yellow Pages™ – printed version naturally!

Small business cards left in cafés, on signboards, exchanged at meetings etc.
Use local resources such as clubs, libraries and community centers for non-profit website awareness raising.

Participate on message boards. Post answers to other people’s questions, ask questions and post appropriate information. Include your signature file containing your website’s URL at the end of all your postings.

Start your own online discussion community. It could be an online message board, e-mail discussion list or chat room. When people get involved in your community, they will regularly return to communicate with others.

Use word of mouth. Tell everyone you know about your website, give out business cards to passers-by in the street, and so on. You might even want to run a guerrilla marketing program!

Use your car, especially if your website is area-specific (e.g. A website detailing local events or selling local services). Get some vinyl decals or bumper stickers created and turn your car into a moving advertisement, literally driving traffic to your web site!

I’d like to build some websites on free platforms where I’d like to promote relevant affiliate products. I need a good list of free blogging platforms and free website building sites which let me to use affiliate links.

Backlinks Bonanza answers:

Google’s Blogger.com seems fairly tolerant of content, others like WordPress.com has a fee for commercial use.
You may well find that the labor investment needed to get enough traffic to actually get sales, makes the monthly cost of a paid host look trivial. Most of the $8/mo “unlimited” shared hosts allow any number of sites on one account.

Donna asks…

How exactly do web sites make money?

Besides google adsense, what else is there? Do people get paid for traffic? What are all the ways you make money from a site if your not selling or promoting a product?

Backlinks Bonanza answers:

Paid advertising space has to be the biggest monetization source, there are numerous ad networks that act as middlemen, offering advertisers a network of sites to place ads on. Some make direct arrangements to rent out banner space for a flat monthly rate, one banner broker showing rate quotes is buysellads.com.

To put it into perspective, some say Adsense “Pays the electric bill” some estimates show other sources including affiliate and CPA offer links can earn about 3X as much. Big name bloggers can be paid for writing endorsements and reviews, some sites with good page rank may sell links to other sites for seo purposes, though this violation of search engine guidelines has to be done on the down low.

Most paid ad systems either pay for clicks, impressions (page views) or on a monthly basis, there are Pay Per View based ads which pay only for the first impression for each unique visitor, so indirectly one can earn a predictable amount from traffic, these PPV ads pay roughly 1/2 cent per visitor.

Most individual’s sites are not treated like a business and never earn significant revenue. Qualified traffic being key to earning, many site operators spend as much time off site promoting and getting backlinks to improve search engines ranking. Unscrupulous operators might use fake software robot or paid 3rd world traffic to pump up their traffic figures, ad networks typically detect such manipulation eventually.
